On January 21, 2026 at Bluebeard’s Castle, the room was filled with conversation, celebration, and a shared sense of purpose as community leaders, advocates, and supporters gathered for this year’s Champions of Advocacy Reception, hosted by the VI Justice Initiative. The annual event brought together partners from across the Virgin Islands to celebrate the progress being made to expand access to justice and create new opportunities for individuals and families across the territory.
Throughout the evening, guests reflected on the impact that collective action can have when a community comes together in pursuit of fairness and opportunity. Stories shared during the program highlighted the transformative power of record clearing and community-based legal advocacy—powerful reminders that removing barriers to employment, housing, and stability can open the door to lasting change.
Founded in 2022 by attorneys Casey Payton and Alex Golubitsky, the VI Justice Initiative continues to grow its work as a legal education and defense fund focused on advancing economic justice. Through programs that provide legal education, expungement support, and support for nonprofit organizations, the initiative is helping ensure that more people have the tools and opportunities they need to move forward.
The evening also served as a moment of gratitude, recognizing the champions, partners, and supporters whose commitment makes this work possible. Their collective support fuels the organization’s efforts and strengthens its ability to reach more people each year. This year we celebrated our 50th Expungement through our Clean Slate Program!
As the reception concluded, the message was clear: expanding access to justice requires a village. With the continued partnership of the community, the VI Justice Initiative is working to restore dignity, remove barriers, and help build a stronger and more just Virgin Islands for all.
